Let's have some fun celebrating Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras Party!

Mardi Gras origins can be traced to medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. In New Orleans it was established in 1718 by Bienville. By the 1730s, it was celebrated openly in New Orleans. In the early 1740s Louisiana's Governor established elegant society balls. These later became the model for the New Orleans Mardi Gras balls of today and the parades followed. Mardi Gras is the New Orleans version of Gasparilla in many ways. (Dress up, get a little crazy, have parades etc.)
Mardi Gras traditions include wearing purple, yellow, green and gold. Please try to wear these colors, at least in part, and if you want, wear a mask to get into the Mardi Gras spirit. Masks, beads and hats will be available at the party.
Beads of course are traditional as is a New Orleans king cake. It is an oval shaped coffee cake, covered in icing and sugar the color of Mardi Gras: purple, green and gold. A small plastic baby is inside. King cake custom demands that whoever cuts the slice of cake that has the baby in it is king for the day — and also has to purchase the king cake next year.
To be considerate of our hosts, as with all our privately hosted party events each guest should bring whatever beverages and liquor they prefer to drink and food to share.
